Protein powders provide a quick and easy way to get protein when you’re on the go, need a pre-workout snack or just trying to get in your requirements for the day.
The question then becomes, which one is best for you.
Women living with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) usually have a high amount of androgens (generally considered ‘male hormones’) circulating in their blood. These excess androgens may trigger symptoms like:
- Acne
- Increased hair growth to face, chest, abdomen and pubic area
- Hair loss from scalp
Acne is one of the symptoms that can cause physical and emotional distress. It is thought to be triggered by different foods and ingredients that increase androgen production which thickens the sebum in the oil glands of skin. However, there are no definitive research studies that prove food causes or worsens acne.
Side note: Always listen to your body, you know it best!
Nevertheless, some women notice these ingredients may worsen their breakouts:
- Whey/Casein (derived from milk)
- Soy
- Biotin
If you have any sensitivities to those ingredients, these protein powders are worth a try:
Garden of Life Raw Organic Protein
22g of protein per scoop
This is my personal favourite because the base of the powder is full of sprouts from peas, quinoa, lentils and flax. Sprouts are amazing because they contain enzymes which improve our digestive health and immune system.
10.5g of protein per scoop
The base of this powder has pea protein, brown rice and chia seeds which is a decent blend. It should be sweeter than the first option with the addition of Erythritol as its sweetener.
Find out more about sweeteners here.
12.5g of protein per scoop
This powder has the simplest ingredients list. We love simple over here. It’s essentially pea protein, coconut milk powder for creaminess and stevia as the sweetener.

Bob’s Red Mill Hemp Protein Powder
14g of protein per scoop
This is the least popular of the bunch, but packed with protein and iron. It has only one ingredient; hemp protein, so be prepared for a less desirable taste than the previous three. Once you add your own sweetener this should be great to supplement your diet.

All of these powders can be had with water or milk, but be sure to boost the taste and nutritional value with some fruits like banana, mango, pineapple or frozen berries and healthy fats like flax seeds, chia seeds, nut butters or pear (avocado).
Honourable mention for those without sensitivities to whey, soy or biotin:
Designer Whey – sweetened with monk fruit and stevia and has 20g of protein per scoop.
Remember to choose what works for you.
